Granite Bay Librarian Christian Moore

Christian, Granite Bay’s Librarian, is here to answer the next set of questions for our #AskALibrarian series! Here are the Q&As:

Q) Any good book recommendations for kids ages 8-9?

A) Every reader has a different taste, so I would start with the question “What was the last book that you enjoyed?” A good way to find read-a-likes is using NoveList. Head over to placer.ca.gov/library, and find NoveList on our Online Resources page. With this resource, you can type in a book that you or your child liked and find similar titles. It looks at genre, themes, reading level, and other factors. I won’t leave you without giving a few recommendations though! With that age, finding a series is a great start. If they like the first in the series, they’ll have plenty of books to read next. Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Goosebumps, Ramona, Geronimo Stilton, Judy Moody and 39 Clues are some popular ones beloved by many.

Q) Are there any books about this region’s history? Thinking gold rush era.

A) Yes! Here’s a handful of local history books that you can find by searching in our catalog and request for pickup at Granite Bay:

Placer County by Arthur Sommers

Placer County: an Illustrated History by Chuck Myer

The stagecoach in Northern California: rough rides, gold camps & daring drivers by Cheryl Anne Stapp

Ghost towns of Northern California: your guide to ghost towns and historic mining camps by Philip Varney

What was the Gold Rush? by Joan Holub

Q) What is the oldest book you have at the library?

A) That’s a tough question for a few reasons: Since we are a public community library, our specialty is not archival work. Rather, we try to keep a wide collection of materials that are most likely to be borrowed by a variety of people. In order to make room for popular new books, we have to periodically discard items that haven’t been borrowed in a long time. This is a big responsibility of librarians: manage the collection! Many of our discarded books are then given to Better World Books who helps benefit the library. Keep in mind, the Granite Bay Library building opened in 1995 so most of our oldest materials were purchased around that time, give or take some years. Searching in our catalog however, I’ve found some titles published in the 1800s which is pretty cool! Of course, we have copies of ancient literary works (usually just in a more modern publication and translation) such as Gilgamesh (1800 BCE), the Odyssey (800 BCE) and other antiquities. That’s pretty old!
