SUMMARY:Japanese Writing and Origami Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn the art of Kanji\, and write a Thanksgiving message using Japanese symbols as well as how to make an Origami! \nThe Friends of the Granite Bay Library are excited to once again partner with Eskaton Lodge in Granite Bay to deliver a new 2 part workshop that is FREE and open to the community. \nDate: Saturday 11/23 \nWhere : Granite Bay Library Community Room \nTime:  1:00 – 4:15 pm – The first part of the workshop is from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm where you’ll  learn Japanese Writing and how to write Happy Thanksgiving in Japanese.  The second part of the  workshop will be from 2:45 pm – 4:15 pm where you’ll how to make an origami. \nRSVP: Reserve your spot by contacting Pamela Dallas\, Pamela.Dallas@skaton.org  or 916-789-0326. \nInstructor Bio \nAmline (Ammie) Tori Nishina\, Hayduk  was born & raised in Honolulu Hawaii. Ammie’s parents were born in Japan and her father\, who lived to 102 was a published author (Dreams of an Immigrant’s Son) writing about his life on a coffee plantation in Hawaii. He also published his wife’s journal which was written in English and Japanese.  Ammie’s  mother and a couple of her aunts belonged to a Geisha Club. She was raised with three older brothers who still live on the islands.  She and her husband have been married for 47 years.  Together we have had the pleasure of raising three beautiful children and enjoying eight wonderful grandchildren.  Ammie enjoys working around the house\, watching Korean subtitled films\, and the an occasional Sunday football game with her husband Bob & son Nate.  She also enjoys cooking and spending quality time with her family.  She has been in the banking profession for over twenty years. \nWorkshop description: \nAmmie will teach a class on the basics of learning the Japanese alphabet and show how to write Thanksgiving in Kanji.  Kanji is a system of symbols that represent words or ideas\, and that can have different meanings and pronunciations depending on their context. A Kanji can be a word all by itself\, like 木 (which means tree) or a kanji can be part of another word like 木造 (which means ‘wooden\, or made of wood’). \nThe second half of the class will consist of an ancient Japanese art called Origami. (o·ri·ga·mi) The Japanese art of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures.  I will be showing all who attend how to properly perform origami.  We will be creating an origami ball and a origami crane.  Traditionally\, it was believed that if one folded 1000 origami cranes\, one’s wish would come true. It has also become a symbol of hope and healing during challenging times. As a result\, it has become popular to fold 1000 cranes (in Japanese\, called “senbazuru”).

SUMMARY:Read for the Record
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, November 7th\, from 4 PM – 5:00 PM for fun\, friends\, and books! \nAbout Read for the Record: \nEach year on Read for the Record Day\, people gather in classrooms\, libraries\, community centers\, and homes across the U.S. to read our chosen Read for the Record book to children in the community. Read for the Record is the world’s largest shared reading experience—bringing together over 2 million people to read the same book on the same day. \nThis annual campaign was launched over a decade ago to bring national attention to inequities in early childhood education and as a way to inspire adults to read with children\, spur policymakers and organizations to take action towards transformative change in early education\, and put books in the hands of more children across the country. Since 2006\, Read for the Record has grown into a global effort\, collectively engaging over 19 million children and adults worldwide. \nHere is a link to the Jumpstart Read for the Record website:https://www.jstart.org/read-for-the-record/
